I woke up in my plush mountain lodge and felt like I was getting the flu. Will this never end!? After sleeping a few more hours I was doing better. I took a couple Gondola rides to get a better lay of the land for future trips. On the way out of town I stopped at Urgent Care to see if they could evaluate me for food poisoning. They said that they did not accept my insurance and I would have to pay upfront and then get reimbursed from my insurance agency. I knew how that would go; countless phones calls until I got sick of it and just ate the money. No thank you. I continued out of town and headed back up north to take the road south down the opposite side of the mountain range towards the town of Ouray.
A quick stop at the True Grit Café for lunch. A good sign that the lunch stayed inside me and not all over the highway.
My parents were in Ouray some time back and thought highly of it so I made sure to put it on my list. Ouray, like the town of Silverton a bit further south are old mining towns that embrace that motif to attract tourists. The Box Canyon Lodge seemed to be the best bet for the night.
They had hot spring hot tubs. I don’t really enjoy being hot so I skipped but the concept was cool
I made y way over to the Historic Western Hotel for a drink. Here you can see women standing over the “face on the floor” whereby standing just right you can see another face within the existing face….confused yet?
Feeling better I decided to tackle a hike. I had heard from some people in Telluride that the Bear Creek Trail was one of the best in the area. It was just a couple miles outside of town with a great view looking back into Ouray.
I turned around at Grizzly Bear Mine seen below, which measured about 5miles round Trip.
Spent a quite night at the Lodge. Tomorrow it was tie to get back to 100% and start knocking out some pound-shreading hikes.
Until Tomorrow
Darren
