This is Not Your Father’s Colombia (Day 4 of 10)

I got up early, as I usually do and began taking pictures. I was to meet Bryan and Lisa at 3pm followed by dinner at 8pm. I ventured back to the old city and split my time between walking the streets and sun bathing on the top of the wall.

We all met up with Heidy at Café Del Mar (my home base) at 5pm for sunset drinks. Then we walked the city, showing many of the points of interest Heidy had showed me a few days earlier. We had a fabulous dinner, listened to some salsa and closed the night early as Bryan and I had an early flight out.

To this point I have not mentioned the safety issue in Colombia.  Americans, for the most part, still believe that this is still the Colombia of the 80s, controlled by the likes of Pablo Escobar; Colombia’s biggest star, outside of Shakira. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every street corner has 4 police officers as they are required to spend 1-3 years in the military before college.  Yes, Colombia does have its rough spots, but no different from any American city. In fact, the most dangerous spots were near the American hostels, where Cocaine was being traded on a regular basis on the street corner after dark. It is a shame that cruise ships anchor here on a daily basis, but most passengers are too scared to disembark. All this will change as the word gets out. I am just glad I got to see it before it is overrun and becomes the next Cancun. It is Colombian’s neighbor, Venezuela, that pose a real threat to NA tourists.

I have been writing this blog for almost 20 years. After owning and operating a travel company, reconnecting with the outdoors, I now spend a majority of my time exploring both off the beaten path and well worn tourist adventures.

“I saw in their eyes something I was to see over and over in every part of the nation- a burning desire to go, to move, to get under way, anyplace, away from any Here. They spoke quietly of how they wanted to go someday, to move about, free and unanchored, not toward something but away from something. I saw this look and heard this yearning everywhere in every states I visited. Nearly every American hungers to move.”
