This is a picture of the beach out the back my apartment. I strolled it in the morning and bought a stone turtle crafted on of the islands to add to my Spanish art collection. For all I know it was made in China.

I met Heidy around 9am and we took motorcycle taxis to the town of La Boquilla, a small fishing village along the water.  Here is a shot of the tight “roads” we were on to get to the village where we were to take a canoe trip through the mangroves.

We met one of Heidi’s friends who had arranged the trip and were off.

I was expecting crocodiles and other large carnivores, but they said that birds were really the only animal in these parts.

After the ride, we stopped at a small school. Heidi knew an Australian girl who was working as a missionary of sorts. I passed out some bracelets and made contact for possible volunteer work in the future.

We got back to town and had lunch in the old city

I had taken a hiatus from my vegetarian diet, as I did not want to miss out on the local flavors. This is some sort of chicken/sausage combo. I should have probably made notes on the names of the dishes. Most dishes were prefaced with a seafood soup and were accompanied by fried plantains and/or coconut rice.

That night we went to a party on the fort wall where African dancers shared their intoxicating drum beating sounds. I also got a picture with a 3-toed sloth. This suddenly vaulted up to my top 5 animals. They are very slow, with fur like a wire brush. They wrap their legs around you and make it necessary to pry them off. I was hesitant to take a picture with him/paying owner, thereby supporting the treatment, but I could not resist and hoped maybe the sacrifices of this one, might inspire others like me to research and support their efforts on a global scale.

Tomorrow, my brother would arrive and we would be off on the next leg of the adventure
