Continuing East I was happy to get that hostel behind me. I was heading towards the Port of Seydisfjordur. They just roll off the tongue, right? This village is where the ferry coming from mainland Europe docks. Although it is not the tourist trap that most port cities are. I am getting ahead of myself.
Leaving Hofn I followed the coast and then heading north into Egilsstadir.
I moved in and out of the fjords (fingers of water that extend into the island). Egilsstadir was not a bustling metropolis even though this is where the other main airport in Iceland is located. I stopped for some groceries and gas and carried on over the hill to the coastal port.
Seydisfjordur is an artist community with a few breweries and restaurants. I got in early and no one was at the hostel. After being unsuccessful in reaching anyone I went exploring
I walked the area for a couple hours after a few glasses of the vodka I picked up at the airport.
I stopped at another pizza place and met a couple from DC on their honeymoon. I felt bad for them as they were doing the ring road in 3 days, while I took 8-9. They were going to miss a lot of the cool sights in the south as I learned that was where all the action was.
I saw this sign in the pizza place bathroom
The next day I headed north to the town of Husavik. It is the best place to catch whales on a tour. In all my travels I had never seen whales up close (within 20-30 ft) and was hoping that would change here. Unfortunately the weather was horrible, per usual and the whale museum was the closest I was gunna get
I waited around till 4pm when I was allowed to check in. There wasn’t much to do but drink as sightseeing took only a couple hours. The receptionist told me at checkin that they had a problem with the computer the other day I guess and sold my room. I was fairly pissed. They had known about this for days and had decided not to tell me. It was too late in the day to find another place as they were all booked. They put me up in a barn in a horse farm outside of town. This was not one of the better days for the trip
Pouring rain the next day and I headed to some sights I skipped yesterday because I wanted to see with better weather. Oh well, gunna make the most of it. I went to the hostel that double booked my room and ate about 3 free breakfasts worth of food before shoving off. I went to Detifoss waterfall after making a couple stops for some cool hikes at Vesturdalur and the horsehoe canyon of Asbygri
On my way to Detifoss I ran into some serious problems on the road with my low clearance 2WD. The puddles below came halfway up my hood and left it smoking after each submerging. I was paranoid I would get trapped out her in the middle of nowhere on a road I should not be on with this rental car.
I finally got the waterfall
Continued on to a couple more waterfalls and place where Jon Snow popped his cherry in Game of Thrones with the Wildling. No one wanted to recreate. I followed around Lake Myvatn and on to Akureyri.
I love this couple. Everyone who comes here buys the wool sweaters.
More Asians being Asian
Got to lodging and no one there. Here we go again. Fortunately the hostel across the street got ahold of them and after a trip to the bar they were able to meet me to open up my room
This is the town of Akureyri. It is a cruise ship stop and seen as the young people’s party spot outside of the capital. I was actually only just south of the Arctic Circle at this point. You can take a ferry over to an island above the line, but I didn’t need to spend 3 hours in pouring rain just to have that claim to fame.
I was content at just walking around the city and grabbing a few beers
Above I was able to find some local Michigan beers. Small world. The bartender was quite familiar with the main breweries of Michigan. They are not as famous Colorado, California, or Oregon but they are doing pretty good.
Local brewery to Iceland
Saw this on the Guestbook at one of the backpacker hostels I had a beer in
Until Tomorrow
